The National Youth Wing of the Nigeria Association of the Blind has continued to drive impactful programmes focused on leadership development, education, technology, and empowerment for visually impaired youth across Nigeria between August 2023 and May 2026.
Through strategic initiatives, conferences, educational support programmes, and advocacy engagements, the Youth Wing has strengthened inclusion and expanded opportunities for blind and visually impaired youth nationwide.
Building Leadership Capacity Across Nigeria
One of the earliest major initiatives of the National Youth Wing was the organization of a comprehensive leadership training programme for National, Zonal, and State Youth Executives.
The programme brought together elected youth leaders and secretaries from across the federation for intensive sessions on leadership ethics, accountability, communication skills, organizational management, and effective administration.
The training significantly enhanced the leadership and administrative capacity of visually impaired youth leaders, equipping them with practical skills needed to coordinate programmes, advocate for members, and strengthen organizational unity at national, zonal, and state levels.
Promoting Braille Literacy Among Youth
The National Youth Wing also organized a Braille Literacy Workshop aimed at reviving interest in Braille reading and writing among visually impaired youth.
The workshop emphasized Braille as a critical tool for literacy, communication, education, and independent living for blind persons.
Participants were encouraged to improve their Braille proficiency to enhance academic performance, employment opportunities, and social integration. The initiative reinforced the importance of Braille literacy as a foundation for inclusive education and self-reliance.
Nationwide Youth Broadcasts Strengthen Communication
Between 2024 and 2026, the National Youth Wing sustained its nationwide broadcast initiatives, creating platforms for direct engagement between the leadership and visually impaired youth across Nigeria.
Through these broadcasts, the National Youth Leader provided updates on youth activities, addressed concerns raised by members, and encouraged participation in organizational programmes and advocacy initiatives.
The broadcasts enhanced transparency, communication, and unity among members while strengthening confidence in the leadership of the organization.
Supporting Access to Higher Education
As part of its educational empowerment programmes, the Youth Wing sponsored the purchase of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry forms for 180 visually impaired youths across Nigeria in 2024.
Beneficiaries were selected from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory based on academic qualifications and O’Level requirements.
The intervention reduced financial barriers to tertiary education and demonstrated the organization’s commitment to educational inclusion and youth empowerment.
Orientation Programmes for MTN Foundation Scholarship Applicants
The National Youth Wing consistently organized orientation seminars for applicants of the MTN Foundation Scholarship for Blind Students.
The seminars featured resource persons who guided participants on application procedures, eligibility requirements, common mistakes, and strategies for successful applications.
These orientation programmes significantly improved awareness and preparedness among visually impaired students seeking scholarship opportunities and enhanced their chances of securing educational support.
Distribution of Educational Materials and Mobility Aids
In September 2024, the Youth Wing distributed educational materials and mobility aids to 36 visually impaired youths selected from Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
The initiative contributed to the educational advancement and independent mobility of beneficiaries by improving access to learning tools and assistive resources needed for academic and social participation.
Maiden National Youth Conference Focuses on Accessible Technology
The first-ever National Youth Conference of the Youth Wing was successfully held from September 8–11, 2024, at Global Hotel and Garden in Lokoja, Kogi State.
The conference was themed “Accessible Technology: A Yardstick for Quality Education and Endless Opportunities for Visually Impaired Youth in Nigeria.”
The event attracted participants from the six geo-political zones and featured lectures, networking sessions, discussions, and capacity-building activities centered on technology, education, and inclusion.
The conference highlighted the importance of accessible technology in education, employment, and independent living while exposing participants to innovative tools capable of improving productivity and learning outcomes.
Second National Youth Conference Promotes Employability Skills
Building on the success of the maiden conference, the second National Youth Conference was held from August 11–14, 2025, at Pitoria Hotel, Umuahia, Abia State.
The conference theme, “Annexing Technology to Enhance Employability Skills for Visually Impaired Youth,” focused on digital literacy, entrepreneurship, innovation, employability, and career development.
Participants gained valuable insights into leveraging technology for economic independence, workplace inclusion, and self-employment opportunities.
The conference further encouraged innovation and digital empowerment among visually impaired youth nationwide.
Proposed Third National Youth Conference in Edo State
The National Youth Wing has proposed the third edition of the National Youth Conference for August 2026 in Benin City, Edo State.
The conference will be themed “From Exclusion to Inclusion: Empowering Visually Impaired Youth for Political and Social Participation.”
The proposed event is expected to bring together visually impaired youth leaders, policymakers, advocates, stakeholders, and development partners from across Nigeria to discuss leadership, civic engagement, advocacy, and social inclusion.
The conference aims to advance discussions on disability inclusion, equal opportunities, and meaningful political and social participation for visually impaired youth in Nigeria.
Commitment to Empowerment and Inclusion
Through sustained advocacy, educational support, leadership development, and technology-driven initiatives, the National Youth Wing of the Nigeria Association of the Blind continues to play a vital role in empowering visually impaired youth across the country.
Its programmes have strengthened educational access, digital inclusion, leadership participation, and self-development opportunities while promoting a more inclusive society for blind and visually impaired Nigerians.
